Capitol Hill --  Winter Session 1:  January 3 - February 7

6 Sundays  Beginning and Beginning/Intermediate Level Classes for Adults

Single Time Swing:  Do you love music that swings -- like Big Band, Rock ‘n Roll, R&B, jump blues?

Want to learn something that’s easy, versatile, lively and really fun to do on the dance floor?   This infectious, truly original American dance has gone global, and spans generations from your parents and grandparents to today’s hip hop generation.

We’ll start at the beginning with uptempo music and simpler footwork, and give you a solid foundation in east coast swing basics and fun variations.  In each class we’ll review the previous week’s material, introduce fun new moves and offer plenty of time to practice and dance.  For those repeating the class or taking it as a refresher, we’ll offer details, variations, styling tips and improv ideas to help you make this dance your own.  This class is for those with little or no dance experience, those who want a refresher or want to dig deeper, and anyone who wants to have fun.  Class begins on January 3rd, but you can still join up through the second class on January 10th. Register on line or just show up.

No Prerequisite

Location: Dance Underground

Day/Time:  Sundays, 5:00-6:00PM    Amount:  $60

                                         Repeat this class:  $45

Your Own Basic Blues:  Blues is the hottest new (and old) dance craze.  If you love bluesy or jazzy music -- by people like B.B. King, Keb Mo’, Taj Mahal, Susan Tedeschi and so many others, this dance is for you.  And for anyone who wants to learn a dance that starts out with what-you-did-to-slow-music in high school (with a chaperone watching) and then gets way more delightful, playful, and fun.  It can go absolutely anywhere from there.  This is the easiest and most forgiving dance you’ll learn, and also the most versatile. (And so much more than being smarmed-all-over by your partner.  The close-grind is only one option among the many really fun things to do with blues).  We’re going for soul and playful partnering in this class.  And when you find that, you’ll be able to take it anywhere.  Dress it up for weddings or galas in tails and a sweeping gown.  Dress it down for blue jeans at the neighborhood pub. This is my favorite place to start new dancers and take experienced dancers for a transformational experience.

We’ll begin with the music.  In this dance in particular, that’s where the dance is.  (And everyone finds a different dance there!) Beginning dancers will learn basic rhythms, steps, and partnering skills.  Experienced dancers will expand your repertoire of steps, movements and rhythm variations and refine your skill and subtlety (your sm-o-o-o-th).  And everyone will learn to make this dance your own.  You’ll be dancing in minutes and you’ll be surprised at how far you come in just a few weeks.   This class is for those with little or no dance experience, adventurers into new dances, those who want to explore deeper, and anyone with a desire to have fun.   Class begins on January 3rd, but you can still join up through the second class on January 10th. Register on line or just show up.  No Prerequisite

Intro to Waltz:  Do you love sweet, romantic music, like Lyle Lovett’s “Waltzing Fool”, or
“Kiss From a Rose” by Seal, or Sarah McLachlan’s “Better than Chocolate”?  Waltz is so-o much more than the box step.
Many say it’s the world’s most romantic dance.

300 years ago the peasants of southern Germany and Austria had a good thing going, and the nobility knew it.  They would sneak out of their boring fancy balls and head for the nearest gasthaus to waltz with the servants.  (Well, mostly it was the men who did this...  Today the scandal is gone, but the thrill

of holding someone close and gliding around the floor to beautiful music is vividly remembered.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to waltz, this is the time and place to start.  We’ll begin at the very beginning, give you a strong foundation in how waltzing works, some sweet and wonderful variations, and explore what makes this dance so special.  Waltz is one of those dances that improves dramatically with age and experience.  If you’ve taken waltz before and want to renew, refresh, refine -- your memory or your dancing -- there will be plenty to gain by coming back.  This class is for those with little or no dance experience, those who want to improve their smooth, hopeless romantics, and anyone with a desire to have fun. You’ll discover a new love in this dance.  Class begins on January 3rd, but you can still join up through the second class on January 10th. Register on line or just show up.

Lake City --  Mondays, year around

Waltz Etc Classes:

Linda teaches these classes with Zachariah and Henry of Waltz Etc.  We teach several variations of waltz, blues and foxtrot and continually introduce new material.  Classes are generally beginning/intermediate level and above, as the pace is more rapid and dance concepts are explored at a deeper level.  Students are expected to have previous dance experience for these classes, even the ones that are described as beginning level.  This is an excellent place to  continue your studies in waltz and blues, and learn things that are interesting, innovative, and new.  The classes are always drop-in and sessions run varying numbers of weeks, according to dancers’ interest.  They progress from week to week, building on the previous week, so if you are fairly new to a particular dance, it is best to start when we first begin a session.  Check out the Waltz Etc. website for more information about specific classes and get on their mailing list if you want to keep track of what’s happening there.
